Claudia Hill (DE/US)

BIOGRAPHY

Claudia Hill is a Berlin-based interdisciplinary artist working with performance art, textiles and somatic forms. Her work has been presented in international art centres and theatres, e.g. at Paris Internationale, during ImPulsTanz at Mumok and at HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin. Her practice emanates from a deep-rooted relationship with textiles and crafts carried out by women, which began in the fashion world.

She explores the ways of communicating through multi-sensory experiences as described in her book Social Fabric Earth Return. It was published by Bom Dia Boa Tarde Boa Noite on the occasion of her solo exhibition at Efremidis Gallery with an installation and a series of performances, during Berlin Art Week and Gallery Weekend Discoveries. Her short film Kŏn′voi′ screened at numerous film festivals, e.g. Les Rencontres Intl., Paris and HKW, Berlin.

Claudia Hill has a background in contemporary dance and her work stems from a fashion career presenting her collections between Japan and New York, where she lived for a long time. As her designs expanded beyond the boundaries of the industry, she designed costumes for choreographer William Forsythe or The Wooster Group and frequently collaborated with choreographer Meg Stuart. She was admitted to the United Scenic Artists of America.

Over time, her work evolved away from these fields towards the healing potential of textile objects and transformative rituals. She is currently preparing exhibitions of the co-weaving practice she initiated.
