Mirjam Klebel (AT)

BIOGRAPHY

Mirjam Klebel is a dancer, choreographer, performer and lecturer. She works at the interface of theatre, opera and dance performance. She is interested in the flow of information and the relationships between text, image, sound and movement. If you imagine the creation of a piece as a fluid physical process, you have to become a thinking body that changes, transforms, translates language into physical parameters, and is able to surprise itself in the process.

It took many years of artistic creation in different disciplines to arrive at this specific position and attitude. In 2002 she graduated from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance SEAD, further workshops followed in New York at Dance New Amsterdam and Movement Research. A scholarship from Tanzquartier Vienna marked the beginning of her international career as a performer and choreographer – anchored in Vienna as an active member of the performance scene. As a performer she works internationally with Milli Bitterli (artificial horizon), Lawine Torren, VRUM, the Theatercombinat, Georg Blaschke, Magdalena Chowaniec, Lisa Hinterreithner, Matej Kejzar, Rotraud Kern and Brigitte Wilfing, among others. Engagements have taken her to various stages and festivals in Austria, Germany, Croatia, Slovenia, Sweden, USA and India, e.g. ImPulsTanz and Steirischer Herbst.

As a choreographer, she develops her own works in which she fluidly switches between disciplines and spaces. With Nicola Schössler she created, among others, the work Die Infantin trägt den Scheitel links (Toihaus Salzburg, 2021). Since 2014 she has been co-creating with Anita Vulesica at numerous theaters in German-speaking countries, including Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus (Weltrettungsauftrag), Theater Basel (Der Gehülfe), Grazer Schauspielhaus (Die dritte Republik – eine Vermessung, winner of the Nestroy Prize 2021; Garland), Burgtheater Vienna (Fiskus) and Theater Bern (Jugojugoslavija). Furthermore, acting as a movement coach, she accompanied other theatre and opera productions of directors such as Amelie Niermeyer, Robert Gerloff, Nele Weber, Jörg Lichtenstein, Susanne Truckenbrodt, Laura Linnenbaum and Jacob Suske at places like Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, Oldenburger Staatstheater, Residenztheater Munich, Volkstheater Vienna, Schauspielhaus Vienna, Marx am Gorki, Bregenzer Festspiele, Landestheater Salzburg and Theater am Kornmarkt in Bregenz.

Since 2010 she has been teaching improvisation and contemporary dance at the Thomas Bernhard Institute (Mozarteum Salzburg) and is a guest lecturer at numerous institutions such as SEAD Salzburg and the University of New Mexico.
