Sketches/ Notebook

Breaking with convention, tearing down barriers and crossing boundaries – Meg Stuart cannot and doesn’t want to do it any other way. So her piece for five dancers with a total of 12 people on stage, bearing the plain title “Sketches/Notebook”, is a format in which unexpected things are bound to happen. In Stuart’s case, a choreography of ideas fleetingly written down means maximum risk and critical reflection at the same time. She introduces characters in fantastic costumes that go in search for something on their experimental ground framed by the audience, trying to surround it – something that is maybe too big for the eye to see. In the process, modes of behaviour come to light that would appear strange in everyday-life contexts, like scattiness and disruption. In the scope of the performance however, these actions are material, like the shining stones that are moved about, the words, and the hinting music by Brendan Dougherty. Stuart makes the forces visible that impact on today’s society: “We have lost our securities but have not yet found the courage to try out different social orders.”
