A cool woman and a nonchalant man, both young, smart and totally trendy, doing their thing in the fancy world of social media. A world which would be totally authentic if these media did not play a practical joke on those two by turning them into neurotic caricatures: their voices squeak and squawk, their babbling faces are distorted in a hilariously funny way. Chris Haring’s (Golden Lion at the 2007 Biennale di Venezia) piece “Talking Head” (2011) is a virtuoso satire about the ramifications of the current communication inflation, calling all kinds of technological finesse for the transformation of analogue body images into the virtual play. The price paid by individuals for their worldwide dissemination on the Net is demonstrated clearly and with great virtuosity. How ready they are to give up their personal dignity and make complete and utter fools of themselves when putting themselves at the mercy of the continuously ongoing comedy of vanities. It is more or less a given that this eventually leads to a hung-over feeling of dejection.
