Lengger is a traditional erotic dance from Banyumas on Java, Indonesia. This is also the home of passionate dancer Rianto, who has mastered not only the aesthetically refined Lengger with its alluring costumes but other forms of traditional Javanese dance as well. In his documentary performance for Choy Ka Fai’s SoftMachine series, the artist explores the fields of tension between traditional and contemporary choreographic practices. Moreover, Rianto experiments with representations of femininity and masculinity as well as with the dichotomies between rurality and urbanity.
