What is Asia? Choy Ka Fai from Singapore is fed up with generalisations and stereotypes: “After all, there are over 48 countries in Asia.” The artist, creator of performances and speculative designer got to work four years ago, when he saw how Asian clichés and exoticisms were being produced in London – incidentally, mainly by non-Asians. Choy Ka Fai set out on an expedition through his home continent: Japan, China, Indonesia, India and Singapore. To represent their country, he interviewed and portrayed twenty artists each, who are active in the field of dance. The result: a video exhibition and a series of performances by dance professionals from the countries in question. At ImPulsTanz the exhibition extends over four rooms of Vienna’s Weltmuseum. The individual documentary portraits present artists from provincial towns of the respective countries because, according to Choy Ka Fai, “in most capitals you meet artists who are originally from somewhere else”. In Vienna, the videos are put into context with objects from the museum.
