"No Comment" Do pictures stand for themselves? Or must they be commented upon, in order to gain meaning? "No Comment" is a TV broadcast which shows pictures from all over the world (also from the Iraq war) - there is no sound, no explanation. "No Comment", latest production by the versatile Belgian artist and founder of the legendary Needcompany Jan Lauwers, presents four portraits of strong women and their rebellion against rigid gender roles and images. There is a Bali dancer (Grace Ellen Barkey), who describes, how the audience wants her to be: mellifluous and exotic, "Salome" (Anneke Bonnema), who talks openly about orgies that caused the death of some young girls and her own sister, yet behaves as if all this happened to some other person; Ulrike (Viviane De Muynck), modelled on the RAF terrorist Meinhof, is a ticking time bomb. She feels hunted by images and constantly questions them with regard to cause and effect. In a department store she commences her final mission º Without words, by the means of her body alone, Tijn Lawton creates an expressive self-portrait taking the shape of one solitary dance solo which is repeating itself in infinite loops. A rational, unsparing stocktaking of four different lives and ways of life, all full of violence, love, death and eroticism.
