"Umwelt" Daily life often appears as if it is in a land of mirrors in which average people like you and I, with all their unmistakeable characteristics, surface repeatedly only to quickly disappear again. In the controversial and hotly discussed piece "Umwelt" by the French choreography icon Maguy Marin this Fata Morgana-like reality is shaken by strong currents of air that pull at clothes and hair. You and I do things in this choreography, they show how easy it is for us to be misled. These mistakes become a sheer, endless flow of apparently real scenes as if edited and shortened for television and in the storms of time they link up, repeat and overlap each other. With its obviously German title, "Umwelt" is a not very comfortable choreographic reflection on power, religion, love and the dangers to our living space as well as on how this multiplicity of environment forces its way into our awareness. Marin leads us into an uncompromisingly concrete, dramaturgically daring, rhythmic form punctuated by metallic sounds. You and I wander like ghosts without the soft-focus lens of infotainment through a register of considerable sins. Wordlessly and as if in a daze. In the end what remains is refuse – and a little hope.
