"Chunking" Between colourfully-papered walls bizarre figures that might have come from a performance by US artist Mike Kelly under the influence of Franz West crawl, wriggle and strut. In "Chunking", a Jan Lauwers’ Needcompany production, Grace Ellen Barkey has created a softpunk scenery shot through with gentle melodies and tough-as-nails music by undground rock band Sonic Youth in which a small, crazy society lives its life. Doll-like childishness and sexual obsession drive these figures on. In a mixture of dance and performance art reminiscent of Bosch's "Garden of Desires" the dancers allow all the shells that remind them of normal life to fall away and slip into colourfully-knitted, full-body overalls, transformed into fantasy animals worthy of the teletubbies.
