Die Zofen

The world of the ladies-in-waiting is a prison. The combination of tedious manual labour, personal isolation and sexual frustration only breeds to incestuous relationship. The Japanese director Yoshi Oida, legendary friend of Peter Brook, produces “Die Zofen” (the Ladies-In-Waiting) as a radical dance theatre piece. This abysmal play by Jean Genet was premiered in 1947 in Paris. It created a scandal. Genet permits that the role of the sexes can be exchanges. The “Trio Infernale”, the sisters Claire and Solange and the Madame are embodies by three dancers: the borderline Brazilian, Ismael Ivo, the animistic pries from Benin, Koffi Kôkô, and the whirling dervish from Turkey, Ziya Azazi. Strong artistic personalities and clashing cultures emerge in a claustrophobic play of passion.
