Bitches Brew/Tacoma Narrows

Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s choreographies are reinforced by her unique musicality, which comprises classical music as well as minimalism and jazz. With her brandnew piece „Bitches Brew/Tacoma Narrows“ the choreographer encounters a masterpiece of jazz music: „Bitches Brew“ by Miles Davis, dating from 1969. The exquisite piece for thirteen dancers is determined by the magic of jazz movement and the astute correspondence between De Keersmaeker’s highly sophisticated choreographical art and the improvisational technique of jazz. The artistic bridging is related to the fate of an US building: In 1941 the Tacoma Narrows bridge in Washington state collapsed after a heavy storm had caused it to vibrate wildly. These movements, highly dangerous for weakly constructed buildings, form the subtext of „Bitches Brew/Tacoma Narrows“, since artist Miles Davis had always been fascinated by the risks of adventurous musical vibrations. „That was my gift… having the ability to put certain guys together that would create a chemistry and then letting them go; letting them play what they knew, and above it. “
