NO SACRE

The body caught in the opposing extremes of being god’s image and a prison made of flesh. These days it is becoming increasingly possible to gain insight into the body and to read in its consciousness. In this topical piece Ismael Ivo, the dance legend from São Paulo, Brazil, examines the consequences of such an ethical, social, aesthetic, biological and spiritual experience. “No Sacre” is the outcome of Ivo’s pedagogic initiative Biblioteca Do Corpo and it deals with the phenomenon of a collective ritual. The piece attempts to find ways that go beyond the rigidity of rational thought to bring us closer to our primal instincts again. “Godliness requires a body”, Ismael Ivo says. To the music of Igor Stravinsky and German composer Andreas Bick, who works with the sounds of erupting volcanos and icebergs breaking apart, and with the dancers of the Biblioteca Do Corpo project, the choreographer opens a library of the body: in answer to “Le Sacre du Printemps” and thus to the complexity of modern life.
