Rwandan performance artist Dorothée Munyaneza traveled to her homeland to create this testimony of female strength. She is drawing from stories told to her by women who were victims of rape as a weapon of war during the Tutsi’s genocide in Rwanda. In Unwanted, Munyaneza, who was 12 years back then in 1994, performs in collaboration with the American experimental singer and musician Holland Andrews aka. Like a Villain, French electronic composer Alain Mahé and South African visual artist Bruce Clarke, a recognized figure in the anti-apartheid movement, who provides the work’s central totemic artwork.
