Ultima Vez / Wim Vandekeybus

What the Body Does Not Remember (Revival)

This piece caused a veritable shock wave when it was first presented to the public in 1987. Extreme speed, utmost precision and breathtaking tension govern this debut piece that was to turn Wim Vandekeybus into one of the most influential Belgian choreographers worldwide at the age of just 24. Firm, brutal, playful and brilliant is the way Vandekeybus takes his nine dancers to the utmost limits of what is possible. To the point before an accident happens, to the moment before love overcomes a person and to the turning point in one’s life that changes everything. The rest is pure action. Now the time has come: a quarter of a century after its first performance, Wim Vandekeybus restages “What the Body Does Not Remember”. The piece has lost none of its persuasive power and demonstrates once again why it is still considered a key work of new European dance: on account of its scale of controlled chaos, pretend belligerence and acrobatic discipline, which are still unparalleled to this day.
