The main aim of this workshop is to dive into the movement language of House Dance – a dance style that evolved in the late 1970s, early 80s in the underground Clubs of New York City. After fully immersing into various grooves and footwork steps, the goal is to feel safer in our bodies in order to express ourselves freely in a cypher, while using the vocabulary of House Dance.

Creating awareness about the collective responsibility of a group and the beauty of feeling free and expressing ourselves in a ‘non-judgmental’ setting is understood as essential. Through various exercises, while dancing with a partner or in small groups, a feeling of community is to be established, while the following questions will be explored: How can we spark our creativity within our own expression of House Dance by letting our body speak without restrictions, self-doubt and fear? How can we find our own ‘style’ within the dance form?

Hierarchies and norms that can limit us in dance also exist within the dance community – let’s break them down and start inspiring each other!
