"Rosas danst Rosas" Perfect dancing, vigorous wiping, aggressive falling, but also shy touching characterise the style of the piece “Rosas danst Rosas”, which marks Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s international breakthrough. A fast beat and periodic shifts of concurrences run through this work from 1983. Back then, the four dancers were admired as “Béjart’s rebellious daughters” in a choreography that is still valid and superb today. A quarter of a century later, De Keersmaeker is considered the most eminent choreographer in Europe with an established company alongside Pina Bausch. “Rosas danst Rosas” was a follow-up to “Fase” (1982), i.e. the first dancing “manifest” of the “classic” living in Brussels. Both works are among the most significant pieces in the history of dance of the past thirty years. “My way of dancing tries to reduce things to the essentials”, says Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, who dances a part in this restaging, “and to enrich them in such a way that their depth becomes apparent”. She presses tenderness and aggression tightly together in this reduction, thus demonstrating the impossibility of balance and harmony in an extremely emotionalised atmosphere.
