Clay

In Greek philosophy Clay is the first, the originary material or almost. It’s the material with which hylomorphism – the notion that material knows what it wants to become – is explained. Pretty nice. Clay knows it wants to become a brick or a seed knows it wants to become a palm tree. Is it the same with dance? Does a certain movement know it wants to become this or that dance? That’s pretty nice too, even though nobody believes in hylomorphism anymore. But what is originary in dance?

Clay is not just the origin it is also a rhythm, a specific rhythm that at moments is set in motion. An ancient rhythm that transforms being into knowledge, a rhythm that opens doors to the unknown. Can dance be rhythmically contaminated by clay.
In this workshop we will return to the hylomorphism of movement and practice the originary dance. Together we will vibe with the rhythm of the clay and discover, through hands-on practices, the foundations of dance.
